Blooming Gifts for Mom

This Spring, as we start to get busy in our gardens once again, many of us are reminded of a deep connection we have with our mothers – passed down in late afternoons in the garden, potted herbs growing on the kitchen sill, or cut flowers on the table. Mothers and gardening go hand-in-hand, so we ‘d like to help you honor those memories in a special way this Mother’s Day. Make her day special by treating her to a gift that will beautify her garden.

Rhododendrons

Here at Weston Nurseries we specialize in Rhododendrons and Azaleas, but there is one in particular that holds our heart for Mother’s Day: The Olga Mezitt Rhododendron. It’s so special that we named it after the horticulturist, wife, and mother who helped to establish Weston Nurseries in the early 20th century.

With a stunning array of delicate, coral pink flowers, the Olga Mezitt is a broadleaf evergreen shrub that is sure to capture your Mom’s heart, too. This large and leafy Rhododendron blooms with cheerful and frilly flowers throughout the Spring – plant one in the garden and home will be absolutely charmed by the faint floral scent.

The Olga Mezitt is exceptionally hardy and, if planted properly, won’t require much nurturing care to perform its best. Ensure that you plant with a well-draining and highly acidic soil to prevent waterlogging at the roots. We recommend using some Penobscot Blend Planting Mix  to help it along. Plant in a sunny location and your Mom will have a lovely statement piece to remind her of your times growing up in the garden. The perfect lasting testament to your Mom, the Olga Mezitt can live for over 40 years.

Lilacs

Lilacs have been the favorite gift for mothers over the years for good reason. These blooms offer an intoxicating fragrance and stunning colors. With varieties available in all sorts of colors, shapes, and sizes, there is a perfect fit for your Mom this year. We adore French hybrid lilacs of any kind, particularly the double blooming varieties. For something a little more petite, choose the “Tinkerbelle Lilac”, which boasts adorable pink and white blooming spikes set against a lush shrub. Lilacs bloom in late Spring, which is perfect timing for Mother’s Day.

Planted in a sunny location, lilacs are known for being very self-reliant. Less time spent working outside is its own treat for mom, as she can spend more time simply enjoying her garden.

Roses

As the most famous symbol for love and affection, giving your Mom roses is a classic way to say “I love you.” Their fame isn’t baseless, either; not only do they have an intoxicating aroma and abundant blooms, but their versatility is largely unmatched as well. David Austen produces some of the most esteemed varieties in the world, including hybrid tea roses, climbing roses, and shrub roses. They come in nearly every color imaginable, so it is easy to find just the right one for Mom.  Roses are the perfect choice for gardens, bouquets, and decorations – it’s like giving your mother a gift of flowers every day.

Other Gift Ideas

We also have other options that are the perfect fit for Mother’s Day. We’d love to help you pick out the perfect thing for your Mom:

  • Potted Herbs: A pot of gerbs is the perfect way to sneak a little more green indoors all year. Some herbs can be tucked away on a windowsill and will offer fresh aromas and flavor all year. Pick up one of Mom’s favorite cooking herbs and she’ll love having a fresh sprig within reach. Our favorites are basil, cilantro, lavender, and thyme.
  • Hanging Baskets: Hanging baskets are an age-old favorite for their ability to uniquely arrange flowers in a gravity-defying garden. Come in with a few suggestions of your Mom’s colors and our experts will be happy to help you find the perfect selection just for her.
  • Succulent Dish Garden: Not only is this a popular way to bring a fresh and contemporary feel to a table or desk, but it could even be a fun DIY project for you and your Mom to try together. With a beautiful dish, a few favorite succulents, and some cactus soil, you can give your mom a chic new houseplant, as well as a new memory of something fun you’ve created together.

Our Garden Centers are full of possibilities for Mom at this time of year. Come in and have a look at our scented geraniums, or Phalaenopsis orchids, or browse some of our favorites listed above. We would love to help you find the perfect fit to tell your Mom how much you love her!
