What is NGICP Certification?

Initiated under the leadership of DC Water and the Water Environment Federation, the National Green Infrastructure Certification Program (NGICP) sets national certification standards for green infrastructure (GI) construction, inspection, and maintenance workers.

Designed to meet international best-practice standards, the certification advances the establishment of sustainable communities by promoting GI as an environmentally and economically beneficial stormwater management option and supporting the development of proficient green work-forces.

Why Is NGICP Certification Necessary? 

The program provides the foundation understanding needed to properly design and oversee the construction, inspection, and maintenance of green stormwater infrastructure.  Designed to meet international best practice standards, this program provides candidates with the technical skills necessary to incorporate green infrastructure into projects successfully. This 35-hour course is theprerequisite for the exam to achieve NGICP certification. The comprehensive program:

  • Expands your green infrastructure building, inspection, and maintenance knowledge
  • Provides competitive edge in the green infrastructure arena
  • Offers clients a way to identify certified individuals with NGICP Certification Database
  • Demonstrates an investment in your professional expertise
  • Offers access to more GI project opportunities
  • Shows your commitment to supporting sustainable performance of GI practices

What Skills are Taught in NGICP Certification?

This course prepares you to demonstrate your competency in these green infrastructure areas:

  • Bioretention (rain gardens, bioretention cells, curb extensions/bulb-outs, bioswales and stormwater planters)
  • Rainwater harvesting (rain barrels and cisterns)
  • Permeable pavements (porous concrete, pervious asphalt and permeable pavers)
  • Green roofs and blue roofs
  • Dry wells and stormwater wetlands
  • A high school diploma (or equivalent) is required to be eligible for NGICP certification

 


 

Classes will be hosted on Zoom and is held on February 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, and 15 2022 at 12:00 pm EDT. An email with detailed instructions to join the NGICP Virtual Training will be sent to all enrolled attendees with an approved application no later than February 4, 2022.

The deadline to enroll in this course is February 4, 2022 at 5pm PST.

NGICP APPLICATION REQUIRED

To attend training, you must first apply and be approved for NGICP. Please refer to the NGICP Application Checklist for certification information and complete the application found here NGICP Certification Application . Submit the completed application to dmcpeters@envirocert.org.
